During the month of February we celebrate our pets oral health.  Dental disease affects 1 in 3 of our pets.  This disease is more than just a problem with bad breath, it is a problem with overall health.  Dental disease can also be painful for our dogs and cats.  The bacteria, plaque, and tartar that accumulate on pets' teeth can lead to infection of the teeth, gums, and supporting structures.  This bacteria can also get into the pet's bloodstream and localize in the internal organs causing stress and disease.

A dental cleaning for your pet is done under general anesthesia.  Many non-veterinary sources offer anesthetic free dentals, which are not recommended.  The biggest problem in a pet's mouth is often the periodontal pocket (the pocket between the gum and the tooth).  Bacteria and debris accumulate in this pocket, therefore, this area must be thoroughly cleaned.  An animal must be under anesthesia to clean this area as it is uncomfortable for them.

We do pre-anesthetic testing to evaluate internal organ function before we place your pet under general anesthesia.  We also place an IV catheter and fluids to help support your pet's cardiovascular system while they are under anesthesia.  A dental cleaning includes an ultrasonic scaling of the surfaces of the tooth (including the important periodontal pocket), tooth polishing, and fluoride treatment.  We evaluate each tooth and if needed, we have the availability to take dental x-rays for evaluation of the tooth roots.

Many people comment on how much better their pet is feeling after a dental cleaning.  They can have improved energy and appetite.  This procedure can make such a huge difference in the life of your pet.  Call today to set up an appointment for a complimentary dental exam and to discuss if your pet needs a dental cleaning.  303.979.4040.
